Informatics Related – Literature Review

Informatics Related – Literature Review Assignment

The purpose of this project is for students to learn about both the tools used to find research studies and the components and methods used for academic studies.

Instructions:

Focusing on a topic that would relate to your future career, find an electronic version of a recently published study (2013 or newer) from a refereed academic journal (peer-reviewed).  Studies older than 2013 will not be accepted.

You might, for example, find a study on e-commerce, electronic media, network design, network robustness, changes in media audiences, or organizational use of information.

For each of the following, present the question in Bold and your answer in regular type. Once completed, post both your assignment document and a copy of the study to the appropriate submit location on Blackboard

Assignment Tasks:

1.      Provide the citation for the study here.  10 pts.

2.      What is the abstract of the article?  (This is usually a 200 word or less article summary) 10 pts (this is your only cut and paste answer)

3.      Was the study experimental or non-experimental?  Explain.  10 pts

4.      Was the research qualitative or quantitative?  Explain.  10 pts

5.      What was the population studied?  5 pts

6.      What sample was used for this study? 5 pts

7.      Method of measurement  10 pts

a.       If the research was quantitative, was the measurement scale used, Nominal, Ordinal, Interval or Ratio?

b.      If the research was qualitative, what data was collected?

8.      Methods of analysis  10 pts

a.       If the research was quantitative, what statistical tools were used to analyze the data?

b.      If the research was qualitative, in what manner was the data analyzed?

9.      What was the conclusion of the study?  10 pts

  1. Why is this study useful to you?  Explain in detail.  10 pts

  1. What would be the next logical step in extending this study?  10 pts

Note: To begin your search, I would recommend using Google Scholar (http://scholar.google.com/schhp?hl=en) which is a meta-search engine that assists researchers in locating relevant scholarly literature from a variety of sources.

For Google Scholar to be most useful in accessing research articles you will want to specify Forsyth as your local library.

To do so:

Types of Nonexperimental Research
1-Survey or poll – draw the attitudes, beliefs, and behavior of a population
2-Sample- a representative group is questioned
3-Census – a study of an entire population

Quantitative research - is research in which the results are presented as quantities or numbers
Qualitative research -  is research which the results are trends or themes described in words.

Nominal Scale - This is thought of as the “naming” level.
Often uses words not numbers.  Nominal data does not put participants in any particular order.
Ordinal Scale - With this scale, subjects are ranked from high to low, but we do not know how much they differ.
Interval – With the interval scale measurements have equal distances between them.
Ratio – Measurements also are on an interval scale, but a ratio measurement has an absolute zero

Sampling

In many research studies, it is not feasible to do a census of the entire population. To create useful information we draw an unbiased sample that represents the population
