Each
response should be at least 150 words and include cited scholarly support. Work
to have a balanced response that includes both proper review of academic
material to establish a foundation along with your own discussion, examples,
and integration of the material. APA formatted in text citations and end of
post references are required in your initial responses to these question sets.
1.
Discuss the roles of conformity, persuasion, group processes (such as group
polarization or groupthink), social comparison, stress, leadership, and/or
attribution. Which processes would you argue are going to be most significant
during jury deliberation?
2.
Look at Table 12.6 on page 519 in your textbook. This presents conflicting
opinions on the issue of non-unanimous verdicts. Which opinion do you agree
with and why? Identify a court case from within the last decade that might have
had a different outcome if a non-unanimous jury decision would have been
accepted. How might that have impacted jury deliberation?
3.
In Chapter 14 of the textbook, the authors describe several models of social
support: the number of social contacts model, the intimacy model, and the
perceived availability model. These models seem to share the assumption that
contact with other people is likely to be beneficial. But we can all probably
think of instances in which some of our social contact, or some of our helpers,
or even people we are intimate with, end up causing us more stress when they
try to help us. How can social support in some instances be a detriment to
health? When might social support have this paradoxical effect? What would you
do to cope or reduce stress in those instances?
