Keeping in mind that The Epic of Gilgamesh is a literary, not historical work, discuss what the poem reveals about Mesopotamian society, Mesopotamian religion, and how the two are interrelated. Some of the questions you may wish to consider are: What is the attitude towards gods in the poem? What is the role of humankind in the Mesopotamian cosmos? What is the relationship between the king and the divine? What do the personal relationships in the poem tell us about the society on a larger scale? Use specific examples from the text to support a coherent argument.
Remember, Gilgamesh is a legendary story and you will have to look at it closely to uncover its historical information. Do not write a summary of the story – I am looking for deep analysis.
This is an exercise in the close reading of a primary text, not a research assignment. Do not use any print or online secondary sources that are not assigned in class.
4-5 pages, double-spaced, 12-point, standard margins, Times New Roman or similar font. Due March 5 in class. Make sure that you will have time and resources to print the paper before class time.
