1. Kathy
has some good project management skills specifically self-motivation and
self-organization. However, at the same time, she lacks enough emotional
intelligence which has led to her team’s failure in completing the project on
time and resulted in large penalties and ultimately spoilt Kathy’s efforts to
impress the upper management and earmark her as a candidate for upper
management. Her team’s failure in this project was due to her lack of emotional
intelligence in the following aspects:
i.
Kathy lacked sufficient self-awareness
character. Even though from her previous project she might have known some of
her main strengths, but she does not have a clear perspective of her
weaknesses. This is because even though the people in her team from the previous
projects always complain of difficulties in keeping up with her, she still
continued making it difficult (by over-working) for her team members in the new
project. She kept doing this mistake because she did not comprehend her
weakness in reading and understanding the feelings of her team members.
ii.
Kathy also lacked the emotional intelligence
character of empathy. She does not possess the quality of considering the
feelings of her team members in making important decision. This is shown in the
following sentence in the Case Study 4.2.
“They bitterly resented her overbearing style,
unwillingness to consult them on key questions, and aloof nature.”
iii.
Furthermore, Kathy lacks social skills and
therefore does not possess the ability to manage relationships with her team
members. They disliked her aloof nature among other non-praiseworthy
characters.
These
are some of the emotional intelligences that Kathy lacked which, if she had,
would have made her very effective in her new project manager assignment.
2. The
emotional intelligence that she lacked most is empathy. She does not have the
ability to recognize the differences in her subordinates (especially in
different parts of the world – North America and South East Asia), make
allowances for those differences, and treat team members in a manner to gain
the maximum commitment from them. This is shown in statement:
“Unfortunately, in expecting her team, made up
of local residents, to change their work habits to accommodate her
expectations, Kathy completely misread the individuals on her team.”
Also,
part of this emotional intelligence which she lacked is the willingness to
consider her team members feelings in making informed decisions. This is
indicated in the sentence:
“They bitterly resented her overbearing style,
unwillingness to consult them on key questions, and aloof nature.”
