Throughout the
semester you will be working on a developing a comprehensive HRM strategy for a
business of your choice. It can be a
business you would like to start or one you would like to develop more fully. You can use examples in the textbook to help
you develop these programs as well as what you have available to you through
your place of employment (if applicable).
If you model your organization on
an existing organization I DO NOT
want their policies, goals, procedures, etc. regurgitated back to me. Use them for a model only and personalize
them as if they were your own.
The project is worth a total of 295 points. The
project will be submitted and graded in sections worth 25 points each. Please refer to the course schedule section
of this syllabus for due dates. A
description of each section is provided below and will be discussed further in
class. All components will be returned with suggestions and corrections (if
applicable) for final submission.
You will be graded on content (15 points) as well as grammar, spelling,
and typos (5 points). There will a 1
point deduction for each error and typo up to 5 points. The written responses are to be double spaced, typewritten in 10 –12 point
fonts, with one inch margins. No
handwritten report sections!
You can complete
this project individually or in pairs, it is your choice. You will want to give this serious thought
because there are advantages and disadvantages to both. Individually, it may be more work. Working in pairs may also have its
drawbacks. “You do this section and I’ll
do the next section” will not be acceptable for this project. If you decide to complete the project as a
pair each person must contribute and sign off on the other member’s
contribution and participation in each section.
It is very easy to identify different writing styles and disjointed
work. Both members will receive the same
grade on the project regardless of participation, no exceptions.
Project sections
will be submitted at the beginning of class.
Late assignments will receive an
automatic 5 point reduction. There
will be an additional 1 point taken off for each additional 24 hour period that
the assignment is late.If you cannot
attend class on the date a section is due you can send it through BlackBoard
e-mail to me. The e-mail must be
postmarked before the 4:00 pm class start time.
NO EXCEPTIONS! If you
choose to use e-mail it is your responsibility to insure there are no e-mail
snafus. You can also submit your
assignments to me early during my office hours if you know you will not be
attending class.
The final project
will be presented in a formal business report format. It must be organized efficiently and
effectively in a professional manner.
Each portion or section of the report should flow into the next.
Components of the report
Many of the
components of this project build off of each other and will focus on an
individual you hire and develop throughout their career, such as the job
description, training program, and performance appraisal. Some thought provoking questions are listed
next to each heading. You are not limited to only these
questions. Be sure to introduce each
component with a brief explanation of what it is and why you chose that
particular type of program to develop.
Cover Page (Due with entire project.)
This will include
class name, your name(s), the name of your organization and the date.
Table of Contents (Due
with entire project.)
Executive Summary (Due with entire project.)
The executive summary should highlight the strengths of
your overall plan and therefore be the last section you write. However, it
appears first in your business plan document.
The executive summary is often considered the most important section of
a business plan. This section briefly tells your reader where your company is,
where you want to take it, and why your business idea will be successful. If
you are seeking financing, the executive summary is also your first opportunity
to grab a potential investor’s interest.
Creation of Your Organization
Include in this
section the description of the organization you will develop. How large is your organization? What is your
industry / market? Who is your
competition? Is it unionized? What are your goals? Develop a Mission Statement that encompasses
your business. Complete a SWOT
analysis. You will also include an excel
spreadsheet of at least 10 employees, including name, age, gender, and number
of dependents. (I would suggest printing
your employee spreadsheet in landscape form because you will be adding to it as
we progress.)
Human Resource PlanPart 1
What is your
strategic plan? Why did you choose this
particular strategy? What type of
organizational structure will you employ?
Why?
Job Description
Assign jobs to your 10 employees from the Creation of
Your Organization section. In addition,
write one concise job description of a position you need to fill
including job specifications. Is it a
new job or redesigned job? Will it be
filled internally or externally? What
type job analysis did you use to determine what was needed for the job to be
filled? What was the process you used to
recruit the new employee? What sources did you use? Why?
Where did you advertise? Include
an example of the ad or other materials you used in recruiting for the job
description you created.
Training program
Create a training
program for the new hourly employee, manager, or supervisor you hired based on
the Job Description Section using the information in Chapter 7. What strategies
did you use to determine the proper training needed, etc.? Develop a detailed orientation plan to fit
the employee you are hiring. Include all mandatory training and any other
company orientation programs for the job described. How long is the total orientation? Construct
a training matrix with individual classes, how long are they, where and when
the classes will be held as well as who will deliver the classes.
Policies
You need to write
at least 3 corporate policies. Examples
of policies you can write could include attendance, dress code, substance
abuse, harassment, emergency evacuation, etc.
Be sure they are concise and to the point. Include discipline procedures for violations
of the procedures.
Human Resource Plan Part 2
Decide if you are
going to expand or reduce your workforce.
How did you forecast your expansion / reduction of the workforce?
If you plan to
grow your organization, how many additional employees will you need? When will you need them? Will the new employees be hourly, supervisors
or managers? What specific jobs will
need to be filled? How will you
communicate these plans to your current employees? Recruitment
material: What sources did you
use? Why? Where did you advertise? Include any ads, or other materials you used
to recruit for the open positions.
Discuss the success or failure of your recruiting efforts
If you are going
to reduce the size of the company how are you going to do it? Will the employee reductions be hourly,
supervisors or managers? How will you
reduce the work force (through attrition, layoff, re-engineering, etc.)? What legal guidelines will you follow? How will you communicate these plans to your
employees?
Performance Appraisal Review
Develop a program
that will provide guidance for your new employee and a means of tracking his or
her performance. The performance
appraisal review will be appropriate to the type of employee you hire.
Pay Structure and Design
You will create a
wage and salary program for your employees from Creation of Your Organization,
including an hourly and salary wage program.
Describe your process, include base pay and if applicable incentive pay,
profit sharing, piece work, etc. (When completed add the individual employee
pay to the matrix created in the Creating Your Organization section.)
Benefits Program
Develop a benefits
program for your employees, including both government regulated benefits and
other company benefits. Why did you
choose that particular package? (When
completed add the type of benefits package each individual will receive to the
matrix created in the Creating Your Organization section.)
Reflection of the Project (Due with entire project.)
This is where you
get to reflect on this project. What are
your thoughts regarding the project?
What, if anything, did you learn?
What, if anything, can you use in your future endeavors? What would you suggest I do differently for
future students? If you worked as a pair
include a segment about the group dynamics.
Reference Page (Due
with entire project.)
You need at least
5 references. Your textbook can be a
reference as well as any materials you used from your place of employment. Be sure to reference all materials used,
including what you may have used from work. Be thorough and accurate in
citations and references. The APA manual 6th edition is the required style
manual for all assignments. (See BlackBoard Content Section for citing and
reference examples.)
