Religions of the World

Religions of the World

Paper Guidelines

Write a 5-7 page paper responding to and commenting on few of the assigned selections from the textbook Scriptures of the World’s Religions (4th edition). The main guidelines are the following:

1. The paper should be double spaced and written with 12 size font, preferably Times New Roman. Do not leave blank spaces between paragraphs.

2. You can choose to comment on a minimum of three passages from the religious books quoted in Scriptures of the World’s Religions provided that you write at least one paragraph for each scriptural passage, i.e. about half a page. You have the option of selecting passages from scriptures of one religion and relating these to your reading of the chapter on the same religion in Living Religions. You have another option of choosing a theme such as “creation stories,” “main beliefs,” “rituals” or “ethical teachings” and then selecting passages on the same theme from several religions. Here you can mention the similarities and differences between these religious texts as you encounter them.

3. When you write your paper, you need to provide a smooth transition from one paragraph to the other in which your paper is constructed as a one unit of academic writing rather than a collection of disunited paragraphs. For example, you can start with a creation story in one religion and the text will lead you to discuss beliefs in the same religion. Afterward, you can start with a passage that explains beliefs in another religion and so on.  Click here for more on this paper.......

4. Please note that the authors’ introduction to each religion in the textbook Scriptures of the World’s Religions is not considered a religious or scriptural passage. A scriptural/religious passage, for example, is the Creation story in the Bible or selections from the Talmud, Hindu Vedas, the Pali Canon, the Qur’an, the Lotus Sutra, etc. that are quoted in the textbook.

5. You need to construct your paper as a piece of formal writing. Therefore, your style of writing in general should follow the basic rules of grammar and punctuation. Also, the paper should start with an introductory paragraph that sums up your thesis and have a conclusion at the end.

6. To provide a clear reference to the selected passages, you need to type first the title and page number(s) of the passage as they appear in the textbook Scriptures of the World’s Religions. Please do not use other than the assigned 4th edition of the textbook since other editions have different page numbers for each religion. Second, provide your own summary of the general meaning of the whole selected text. Third, reflect on the meaning of the scriptural passage as a modern student of religion: Is there any part of the passage that seems strange or difficult to understand? How do you view this passage in light of your reading about the same religion in Living Religions? Please do not quote the whole religious passage or parts of it in your paper. Rather, you should only refer to specific verses, lines, paragraphs by their numbers in the textbook. For example, you can write “in the third paragraph on page 50” and then you explain and reflect on the meaning of this paragraph. If your paper contains any quotations from the textbook, then you have to make sure that you write a minimum of full five pages in your style of writing without the quotations. This is to fulfill the writing requirement in this course.

7. Using sources other than the two textbooks is not accepted in this assignment. This is a reflection paper on selections from the textbook Scriptures of the World’s Religions and therefore it is not a research paper. The paper will be rejected if sources other than the two textbooks are quoted.  Click here for more on this paper.......
