Norm Breaching Assignment

Norm Breaching Assignment
Every day you adhere to social norms. The norms can range from something as simple as sitting in the same seat every day in class, even though the instructor does not assign seats, to facing forward in an elevator, todressing appropriately for particular events. You will breach a societal norm for this assignment.  The norm you are breaching must not break any laws, and should not get you in any trouble. The norm breaching can be performed anywhere: at home, at school, at work, or even in public. After breaking this norm you will write-up your experience.

This assignment can be tricky, and may make you feel uncomfortable.  If you feel uncomfortable please come talk to me and I will try to address you concerns, as well as help you try and come up with a norm breaching experience you are comfortable with.

Assignment Content Instructions:
Write a 2-3‐page paper (typed, double‐spaced, size 12 times new roman font, 1 inch margins) that discusses your norm breaching “experiment” by addressing the following questions:
·         What norm did you break?
·         How did you break that norm? (Describe the norm breaking process thoroughly, try and make me feel as if I was there!)
·         How did you know it was a norm?
·         Why do you think this norm exists?
·         Why did you choose to break this norm?
·         How did you feel while you were breaking the norm?
·         What were other people’s reactions?
Grading:
The essay must be 2-3 pages and should be written in MLA format.  For specific details of MLA, please feel free to access the OWL Purdue Online Writing Lab at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/(Suggested Resource section.) You will be graded on following MLA format, your grammar, how well the essay is organized, actually performing the “experiment”, and adequately answering all questions listed above. Be sure to provide proper citation and documentation to ideas and words that are not your own.

Other  Instructions:
In the top left-hand corner of the first page include your name and your student ID (Tartan card number) in parentheses after your name, faculty name, course number and section and date due.
