make the external internal?

Take kids you are around often (classroom, own kids, Sunday school kids, etc) and think of those you have that are only externally motivated to do __________.   How can you change that to internal motivation?
For Example, we are currently trying to get our two daughters to be more active. About a month ago, I signed up the family for an indoor triathlon about 3 days before the actual tri.  Our oldest is not a fan of running. Our youngest is not a fan of the bike. None of us are a fan of getting up at the crack of dawn. But, the girls are motivated by the medal they will get if they complete the course and we are motivated by not having kids who are overweight (knowing the long term potential health effects of such).  If we rely on the medals, however, we could see a backlash later on... we are trying to figure out a way to make them love being more active. For us, it was finding dancing for the youngest and basketball for the oldest. So, for now, we have them both motivated to move more for at least 3-ish months a year! :-)
