Essay Assignment: Reader Response Essay

TOPIC:

This assignment will differ from the essays you write for the midterm and final in that, instead of a close critical analysis, you will be writing a more open response to one of the stories from the quarter, showing how that story connected to you on a personal level.

GUIDELINES:

·         Choose from any story that we covered during the term.
·         Include a properly formatted title of your own creation that relates in some way to the content of your paper.

·         Start with an Introduction that 1) includes the title and author of the story you are writing about, 2) gives a brief explanation of your interest in the story, and 3) states your main idea or thesis about the story and how it connects to you.

·         In the Body of your essay: 1) Summarize the aspect of the story that you connected with.  Limit your summary to one or two paragraphs at the most.  Do not give a detailed retelling of the entire plot of the story.  2) The longest part of your essay (several paragraphs, at least) will explain the personal connection that you made with the story, putting the story into the context of your own thoughts, feelings, and experience.

·         Write a Conclusion that puts your reading experience in perspective.  What did the story mean to you?  What are your final thoughts on the topic?

·         Include a properly formatted Work Cited entry for the story at the end of your paper.

·         Essay must be typed and double-spaced.  Include a single-spaced heading in the left-hand corner of the first page that includes the following:

                                    Your Name
                                    HUM332
                                    Professor Frew
