Health Policy

Health  Policy  Assignment  Guidelines
This  assignment  is  an  individual  written  paper.  Finding  current  health  policies  to  explore  can  be  challenging  so  I  have  chosen  ones  for  you.  You  will  self-‐select  into  teams  of  3  students  for  each  policy.  This  is  to  ensure  that  all  policies  are  used  and  there  is  an  even  distribution  students  and  policies;  it  is  not  to  work  together  on  the  actual  final  submission,  although  you  will  use  peer  review  for
Part 1rt  1.
Health  Policy:  Why  it  is  important  Recent  and  ongoing  changes  in
healthcare  necessitate  that  nurses  know  the  importance  of  understanding  health
policy  both  in  the  arena  of  how  health  policy  impacts  nursing  practice  now  and
also  in  the  future.    “Nurses  are  well  aware  that  today’s  health  care  system  is  in
trouble  and  in  need  of  change.  The  experiences  of  many  nurses  practicing  in  the  real  world  of  health  care  are  motivating  them  to  take  on  some  form  of  an
advocacy  role  in  order  to  influence  a  change  in  policies,  laws,  or  regulations  that  govern  the  larger  health  care  system.  This  type  of  advocacy  necessitates  stepping  beyond  their  own  practice  setting  and  into  the  less  familiar  world  of  policy  and
politics,  a  world  in  which  many  nurses  do  not  feel  prepared  to  operate  effectively.  Successful  policy  advocacy  depends  on  having  the  power,  the  will,  the  time,  and  the  energy,  along  with  the  political  skills  needed  to  ‘play  the  game’  in  the
legislative  arena”  (Abood,  p.  1).  It  is  for  these  reasons  health  policy  is  content  in  a  leadership/management  course  and  why  you  will  explore  a  specific  area  of
health  policy  for  this  assignment.    The  health  policies  for  this  assignment  are
listed  at  the  end.  Teams  are  set  up  on  the  BB  course  so  you  can  sign  up  and
have  access  to  a  wiki  to  share  your  early  descriptions  of  the  topic  for  peer
review.  Use  the  questions  posted  to  guide  comments  to  your  peers.  It  is  up  to
each  team  to  decide  how  all  papers  will  be  reviewed  within  the  team.
Participation  in  this  aspect  of  the  assignment  is  required. Components  of  the
Paper  Examine  the  health  policy  by  addressing  the  following areas  and  questions.    Be  sure  to  include  an  overall  introduction  and  conclusion  to  the  paper.  The
complete  paper  with  title  page,  references,  and  information  literacy  should  be  8-10  pages.

Part  1:  Introduce  the  policy  by  describing,  explaining  its  components. (250-500 words)
Part  2:  Conduct  a  literature  review  to  consider  what  has  been  written  about  the  policy  in  the  last  five  years.  This  review  will  include  an  analysis  of  the  articles  and  include  a  synopsis  of  the  main  ideas  and  an  evaluation  of  the  content.  Do  you
agree  or  disagree  with  the  viewpoint(s)  put  forward  in  the  literature?  Why  or why  not?  Does  the  literature  perspective  of  the  policy  coincide  with  the
current  policy?  Provide  rationale  and  support  for  your  comments. 1200-1500 words

Part  3:  Why  is  the  policy  topic  important  to  nursing?  How  do  you  believe
knowing  more  about  this  policy  might  impact  nursing  practice?  250-500 words.

Writing  Component   Organization,  flow,  writing  and  APA  format  will
also  be  assessed  in  this  assignment.   Be  sure  to  use  headings/subheadings  for  the  different  sections  of  the  paper.  Review   the  rubric  for  distribution  of
points.
